This is the filler tape that goes inside the winding. Expanded PTFE spiral wound gasket filler material is supplied as a thin, dense, white tape that gasket manufacturers wind together with the metal strip to form the soft sealing element of a spiral wound gasket. It is produced from 100% virgin PTFE resin and expanded into a micro-porous network, so it keeps the chemical inertness of PTFE while cutting down the cold flow and creep relaxation that shorten the life of ordinary PTFE fillers.
Because the tape is wound to the finished gasket size, there is no die cutting, no scrap and no size inventory. It will not age, harden, shrink or dry out in service, and it seals rough or damaged flange surfaces reliably. It is wound in dust-free workshops with no binders, fillers or processing aids, which keeps process streams clean in pharmaceutical, food, semiconductor and ultra-pure water service.
A conventional PTFE filler is dense and solid. Under sustained bolt load it creeps, the gasket relaxes and the joint starts to weep. The expanded version is different: the expansion process pulls the PTFE into a micro-porous fibrillated network that stores elastic energy, so the filler keeps pushing back against the flange faces long after installation.
That single structural difference is why gasket manufacturers specify expanded PTFE filler for joints that cannot be re-torqued easily — high-temperature steam lines, cryogenic LNG and ethylene service, and corrosive chemical flanges where a leak means a shutdown.
