Expanded PTFE valve stem packing is a soft, round, white cord made from 100% pure virgin PTFE resin that has been expanded into a fibrous micro-porous structure. Unlike braided packing made by interweaving fibers, expanded PTFE packing is a continuous extruded cord — it has no weave pattern, no surface lubricant and no graphite or aramid content. This makes it chemically inert to nearly every industrial medium, with an extremely low coefficient of friction that protects the valve stem from scratching and wear.
Its high tensile strength lets it be cut into individual rings that stack neatly inside the stuffing box, or formed into a continuous spiral for larger glands. The softness and self-lubrication reduce the gland torque required, extend packing life and minimize shaft fretting — making it a widely used choice for valves, faucet stems, rotating shafts, reciprocating plungers and flanged joints in chemical, petrochemical and food-grade service. Standard practice — 3 to 5 cut rings, each seated flat in the gland

Wrap the cord snugly around the stem and cut at the correct length — packings cut at an angle are easier to install.
Insert each ring separately and press it firmly to the bottom of the stuffing box before adding the next.
Rotate each ring 90° from the previous one so the cut joints are staggered. Tighten the gland nut gradually during the first few hours of operation.
